自17世纪以来，许多西方人，包括政府官员、军人、商人、传教士、学者、旅行家等以各种目的来到中国，开展各种活动，不但对中国社会的发展产生过重要的影响，而且留下了大量关于中国的记录。这些西方人在中国的亲身经历、所见所闻的记录不但在研究中外关系史、西方文化在中国的传播和影响、中外文化的互动等方面是极其重要的第一手资料，更是研究中国近代社会生活方方面面的重要资料。
本汇刊收集、全文影印散藏于各地、读者不易得见的上述作品，每辑收10种英文旧籍。全文影印的同时，进行了整理工作：对每种旧籍翻译其书名、作者名、目录，前言、序、内容介绍、跋、后记等；结合原书内容或相关资料，为每种书撰写一篇提要，内容包括作者信息，如生卒年、国籍、简单生平（尤其是在中国的主要经历、主要业绩）、主要著述及历史评价等；本书信息，如成书背景、成书时间、主要内容、主要观点、历史评价等。便于研究者的阅读、使用
